Source: Open Data NY (CSV). The dataset includes details for each wildland fire recorded after 2007 under the jurisdiction of the DEC NYS Forest Rangers, documenting controlled or prescribed fires as well as wildfires.
  • An upward trend in the number of wildland fires is observed from the year 2008 to 2022, with 215 incidents reported in 2022.
  • The year 2010 had the third highest number of fire incidents (164), followed by a significant drop in 2011 (56 incidents), indicating either a yearly variation in incidents or a change in reporting or data collection methods.
  • While the number of fires decreased from 2009 (173 incidents) to 2010 (164 incidents), there was a substantial rise in fire incidents in the following years, peaking in 2022 with 215 reported fires.
  • These numbers illustrate an overall increase in fire incidents reported by the New York State Forest Ranger Wildland over the 14-year period analyzed.
